The Emergency Landing Planner Experiment

چکیده
In previous work, we described an Emergency Landing Planner (ELP) designed to assist pilots in choosing the best emergency landing site when damage or failures occur in an aircraft. In this paper, we briefly describe the system, but focus on the integration of this system into the cockpit of a 6 DOF full-motion simulator and a study designed to evaluate the ELP. We discuss the results of this study, the lessons learned, and some of the issues involved in advancing this work fur-

An Emergency Landing Planner for Damaged Aircraft
Considerable progress has been made over the last 15 years on building adaptive control systems to assist pilots in flying damaged aircraft. Once a pilot has regained control of a damaged aircraft, the next problem is to determine the best site for an emergency landing. In general, the decision depends on many factors including the actual control envelope of the aircraft, distance to the site, ...

Title of Document: EMERGENCY FLIGHT PLANNING FOR THE GENERALIZED TRANSPORT MODEL AIRCRAFT WITH LEFT WING DAMAGE Yunshen Tang, Master of Science, 2006 Directed By: Assistant Professor, Ella M. Atkins, Department of Aerospace Engineering A nontrivial fraction of aviation accidents are caused by in-flight damage or failures that reduce performance. Researchers are working to ensure future avionics...
متن کاملAn Analytic Trajectory Planner for Aircraft with Severe Damage or Failures
This paper describes an analytic real-time emergency landing trajectory planner applicable in situations where an aircraft experiences severe damage or failure(s) that contract the feasible lateral plane flight envelope. Solutions are constructed as sequences of spirals that follow a reference arc, extending a traditional Dubins path solver to handle cases in which an aircraft cannot fly straig...

متن کاملEmergency Landing Automation Aids: An Evaluation Inspired by US Airways Flight 1549
The Hudson River emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 inspired aviation enthusiasts and citizens alike. The pilot's skill and composure were exceptional, clearly contributing to one of the most successful aircraft water ditchings possible. As we prepare for transition to a next-generation air transportation system, we are developing new technologies both to increase system capacity and e...
